Hi!

Thanks for checking out our travels! We love going to new places, having big (and small adventures), eating great food, and documenting the exciting, and often silly, moments along the way.

Everything We Ate in Napoli

Everything We Ate in Napoli

We took a quick trip to Napoli this month and truly ate our hearts out. We wanted to go somewhere for our anniversary and we decided on Napoli because we were looking for somewhere we had never been to before and that we could fly to on the cheap from Barcelona. So we let the Skyscanner people decide our fate and started fantasizing about all the food we'd be eating. And let me tell you, they don't f*&% around in Napoli- the food was ridiculous.

In addition to delicious things, it's a city that also boasts a rich history, fabulous architecture, a pretty harbor, warm people, and a nearby active volcano. We stopped eating long enough to hit the fabulous National Archaeological Museum and the stunning Sansevero Chapel Museum, take a trip out to the lovely island of Ischia and even hike up to the rim of Mount Vesuvius. But let's get to the food already, shall we? Here's the astonishing amount of yumminess we stuffed ourselves with in 4 days...

1. Sfogliatella

Flaky pastries filled with sweet, orange scented ricotta. Basically, the breakfast of champions.

I'm convinced these are made by angels or fairies.

2. Pizza

We ate A LOT of pizza in Napoli and yes, it's fantastic. Two of the cities best pies can be found on the same street,Via dei Tribunali, at Pizzaria Vesi and Pizzaria Sorbillo.

So much pizza, so little time...

3. Ragu

This meat based sauce served with pasta is a Napoli Sunday favorite.

When you wish your grandma was Italian.

4. Baba

This rum soaked cake is somehow light and yet coma-inducing (I guess it depends on how much pizza or pasta you stuffed yourself with beforehand).

Who's your baba?

5. Pizza Fritta

Yes, it's actually fried pizza, and it's definitely the late night food choice here. Even though it's a high calorie carb bomb, it's somehow lighter than you would think. The dough is airy and not at all greasy. If I go on, I might start saying it's a pretty healthy snack, so I'm just going to stop now.

Oh yes we did.

Oh yes we did.

Show that pizza dough who's boss.

6. Gelato

What's that in the photo you ask? It's basically a cone-shaped donut, dusted in sugar, filled with 3 or 4 scoops of gelato and topped with cookies and m&ms. You can find this monster at Chalet Ciro.

We're a little embarrassed about this one.

7. Spaghetti alle Vongole

Spaghetti with clams...fresh and light, simple yet complex pasta perfection.

You're so pretty.

You're so pretty.

8. Croquette

Basically a mashed potato dumpling, stuffed with meat, cheese, or other fillings, rolled in bread crumbs and deep fried. The one we had was stuffed with smoked gouda and we ate it so damn fast that there is no photo. It was amazing.

9. Arancini

Similar to croquette, but instead of potato it's a rice ball, stuffed with endless varieties of deliciousness, breaded and deep fried. You can guess why there's no photo here either.

10. Chocolate

This traditional chocolatier has too many fantastic treats to mention. Just go.

11. Frittelle di Fiori di Zucca

Zucchini flowers, stuffed and fried. This was actually a delicate and light appetizer and I almost wish it was the main course. I'll take a picture next time, because I definitely foresee more of this in my future.

12. Nocciola Espresso

It's espresso with hazelnut sauce. If you can read this, please find a way to bring me some now.

It's not fair to the other coffees.

13. Torta Caprese

This chocolate and almond cake actually hails from the nearby island of Capri, but we still found a pretty great slice on the mainland.

Torta Caprese roughly translates to "oh my god" in Italian.

If you're planning a trip to Napoli, be sure to try these delicious foods and all these fabulous places that serve them. I’m sure you’ll discover your own favorites as well… happy eating!
