A Full Day of Eating in LA
It would take weeks to hit all the must-go-to restaurants, cafes, dive bars and food trucks in LA, so it's overwhelming to have to pick just a few when you only have a weekend. Here's a list of fabulous places that we covered in just one day and that satisfied all of our sweet and savory cravings.
8am: Eggslut
If you love breakfast as much as we do, this may just be your favorite spot of the day. The small menu is centered around- you guessed it- eggs. Their egg sandwiches are sure to beat any you've ever had, with the eggs themselves cooked to absolute perfection, served on a plump, buttered brioche bun, with or without avocado, bacon or turkey sausage. Then there's the real star, the slut (yes, that's what it's actually called): a coddled egg cooked in a jar atop silky potato purée, topped with chives and served with crispy baguette slices. This was one of those rare moments where I was so blown away by what I ate that I thought about it all day. And the next day. And the day after that. I'm still thinking about it right now.
10am: Acai Dream Bowl
I know what you're thinking...we just ate two hours ago. But haven't you ever heard of second breakfast? Besides, we have a lot of eating to do on this fabulous day in this fabulous city, so we're just trying to be efficient here. And we walk a lot, so we're burning through all this food quick (or at least that's what we tell ourselves). Anyway, Acai Dream is a food truck whipping up nutritious, vitamin-packed smoothie bowls that will hit the spot.
1pm: La Isla Bonita
Hopefully you are spending at least part of the day in Venice. Whether you passed the morning surfing, biking or just strolling amidst the action on the boardwalk, it's now time to make your way to this killer taco truck. If you read my post about Tacos in Southern California, then you know this is a must have meal in Los Angeles. The shrimp tacos at La Isla Bonita are some of the freshest and tastiest we've had, but the ceviche tostada is what everyone really comes here for and it's nothing short of fabulous. And with so much more to do (and eat) the rest of the day, who's got time for a sit down lunch?
4pm: Salt and Straw
Ice cream time! Walk over here while you're still in Venice and burn a few extra calories. Locally sourced quality ingredients and rich, complex flavors make this a treat that's really next level (and worth every calorie). There are so many flavors (and so little time), so go with a friend or two and get different flavors that you can share. This is not the day to order a cup (unless you're gluten-intolerant, of course)- go for the waffle cone! Enjoy as you browse all the cool shops along Abbot Kinney.
7pm: Sweetfin Poke
That monster cone kept you full for a few hours, but now it's time to eat again. Poke is all the rage across LA and there seems to be a new spot everywhere you turn. On days like this where a lot of decadent eating will go down, it's nice to have a lighter meal like this to balance things out. You'll love Sweetfin for all the different options, from traditional spicy tuna to refreshing mango albacore, and for all the extras you can add on, like crispy onions. Besides the signature dishes you can also create your own poke bowl. I wish I took a picture of my beautiful meal, but I ate it so fast it's kind of embarrassing.
11pm: Roscoe's House of Chicken'N Waffles
Oh yes we did. Loved by both Snoop Dogg and Barak Obama, this institution is legendary. The fried chicken is hands down the best we've had anywhere- perfectly seasoned, succulent, crispy, and not greasy. Want to know what was even better than the chicken and waffles? The chicken and cornbread! Is there a more perfect late night meal?
